JUCO refers to junior and community colleges fielding NJCAA, CCCAA, or NWAC athletic programs. Many junior colleges are open admission. Athletes use two years to raise their grades, build game film, and develop physically, then transfer to a four-year program.

It's a well-worn route to D-I and D-II, not a fallback. To compete as soon as you transfer up, Division I needs a 2.5 GPA in your transferable credit hours and full-time terms at the two-year college, plus graduation and 48 semester hours if you were not an NCAA qualifier. Division II's requirements include at least 9 degree credit hours in your last full-time term and either a 2.2 GPA in your transferable credit hours or a two-year degree.
