What is NCAA Division II?

NCAA Division II sits between D-I and D-III. Schools offer partial athletic scholarships, meaning most D-II athletes get a mix of athletic and academic aid rather than a full ride. Rosters are competitive but the recruiting funnel is wider than D-I, so it's often a realistic target for strong high school athletes who aren't quite FBS or FCS caliber.

What GPA do you need for Division II sports?

To compete in your first year, the NCAA minimum core GPA for D-II is 2.2, slightly lower than D-I. Test scores have not counted for Division I or Division II initial eligibility since August 1, 2023. Because D-II combines partial athletic scholarships with academic merit aid, a stronger GPA can directly increase your total financial aid package, not just your odds of getting recruited.

How are Division II scholarships different from Division I?

D-II programs work with scholarship equivalencies that are typically spread across more of the roster than a full-scholarship sport, so most D-II athletes receive a partial award. Schools frequently stack academic aid on top of the athletic award, which is why grades matter as much as stats at this level.
