You do not need a paid recruiting service to play college football. Coaches recruit from their inbox, the camp circuit, and the film a kid sends them. The seven steps below are the move a kid and parent can run on a Tuesday night, without paying what families report those services charge.
“My younger brother Kyle walked the same road. Don Bosco Prep, overlooked by Power-4 programs, then Rutgers Big Ten captain, then the 2025 Chicago Bears in the seventh round. I walked it first. Villanova to the Eagles and Vikings as a player, then the Giants as a coach. I built RawRecruit because I know what it looks like when the phone is not ringing and you have to find the path yourself.

The Seven Steps
Run It Yourself
About forty-five minutes a week, sophomore spring through senior fall.
- 01
Know Your Real Fit
Start with the truth. Your position. Your height and weight. Your forty, your bench, your GPA, your test score, your three best plays on film. Compare those numbers to the cohort that actually exists at your level, not to the highlight reel of a five-star. The minute you know your fit, the school list builds itself.
For parents: Honest numbers prevent a year of emails to programs that were never going to call back.
- 02
Build the School List
About 1,500 college football programs exist in this country, FBS through JUCO. Power 4 is sixty-four of them. RawRecruit tracks 725 of those programs with a verified 2025 roster right now, and the count grows every month. Filter that list by division you can play at, region you can drive to, and position the program is recruiting this cycle. The shortlist that comes out is where you spend your reps.
For parents: A focused list of fifteen to thirty real-fit programs beats a hopeful list of two hundred.
- 03
Get Film Coaches Use
Coaches do not watch your full game. They watch the first sixty seconds of your reel. Lead with five plays that show what you actually do on Saturday. Tag your number on every play. Cut the music. The first three plays decide whether they finish the reel or close the tab.
For parents: Pay for the cut once. A clean sixty-second reel travels through the whole school list.
- 04
Send the Email Coaches Read
The coach inbox is full. Yours is the email that gets read because it is short and specific. Subject line names you in three pieces. Body opens with where you saw the program fit, lands three numbers, drops one film link, asks for one thing. Camp invite, junior day, or a quick film review. Pick one ask per email and send it.
For parents: One email per coach, sent direct, beats every recruiting service mass blast you can buy.
- 05
Read the Response Signals
Coaches do not say no. They go quiet. Three weeks of silence is your answer for that program; move it down the list. A transcript request, a camp invite, or a question about your seven-on-seven is the real green light. The follow-up email goes once, ten days later, with one new piece of information. Not twice.
For parents: Track every send and every reply. The pattern tells you where to spend the next round.
- 06
Run the Visit and the Call
Visits are interviews going both ways. Ask the coach what the depth chart looks like at your position next season. Ask how many guys hit the transfer portal last cycle and why. Then find a player and ask what the building feels like when the coach is not in the room. The answers tell you whether the four years are real.
For parents: The visit is when you check the math the brochure cannot show. Use it.
- 07
Decide on Full Information
An offer is a moment. The decision is a four-year stretch. Stack the aid package against the depth chart against the program's transfer-portal trend. Walk the family through the numbers in a quiet room. Sleep one night. Any coach who pressures you for a same-day verbal told you something about how that program runs.
For parents: The 24-hour rule protects against a verbal you have to walk back. Use it every time.

Real Outcome
The Same Playbook, One Brother
The seven steps above are not theoretical. My younger brother Kyle ran them out of Don Bosco with no Power-4 offers. He walked into Rutgers, captained a Big Ten roster, and got drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Methodology
Where the Numbers Come From
Program counts, roster counts, and coach counts come from the live RawRecruit database, checked against public football rosters and program staff pages. Coach data carries a verified-on stamp and rolls off when the source page goes stale. The seven steps are the playbook Kevin used with Kyle. Every claim above traces to a real roster line or a real coach record.
The Conversation
Questions Athletes And Parents Ask Us
- Do I need NCSA or a paid recruiting service to get recruited for college football?
- No. College football coaches recruit from their inbox, the camp circuit, and the film a kid sends them. They do not buy lists from a recruiting service. The seven steps above are the same playbook a paid service runs at the yearly cost families report paying.
- How much film does a college football coach actually watch on a recruit?
- Sixty seconds, sometimes less. The first three plays decide whether they finish the reel. Lead with five plays that show your money down, tag your number on every play, and cut the music. If the first reel hits, the full game tape gets requested.
- When do D-II and D-III football coaches start replying to recruit emails?
- D-III opens first because NCAA rules let those coaches engage early. Most D-II coaches ramp up replies during your junior year. D-I FCS and FBS hold to the NCAA contact calendar. Send early, expect the heavy response window to land between sophomore spring and junior fall.
- What does it actually mean when a college football coach does not reply to my email?
- Three weeks of silence is your answer. The position need shifted, the fit did not land, or the inbox buried you. Move the program down the list, not off it; a coaching change next cycle can reopen the door. Send one well-timed follow-up, ten days after the original, then move on.
- Is a Power-4 walk-on offer worth more than a D-II scholarship offer?
- It depends on the depth chart, the transfer-portal trend, and what the family can carry on tuition. Walk-on means no scholarship, a deeper roster, and a longer climb to the field. A D-II scholarship plus playing time often beats a P4 jersey you never wear. Run the numbers before the name.
- Should I commit verbally to a college football program on the visit?
- No. Sleep one night. A coach who respects you will respect a 24-hour decision; a coach who pressures you for a same-day yes told you something about how the program runs. Walking back a verbal is harder than turning down an offer.
- How many college football programs are there outside the Power 4?
- About 1,500 college football programs exist across FBS, FCS, D-I outside FBS/FCS, D-II, D-III, NAIA, and JUCO combined. The Power 4 conferences hold sixty-four of them; the rest is where the recruiting math for most kids actually lives. RawRecruit currently tracks 725 of those programs with a verified 2025 roster, and the count grows every month.
- My kid is already a junior. Is it too late to run this playbook?
- No. Junior fall through senior fall is when most D-I FCS, D-II, D-III, and NAIA response windows open up. Power-4 timing locks earlier, but the 98 percent of programs outside the P4 are reading recruiting emails right now. The seven steps work faster the later you start because you stop wasting time on programs that already filled their class.
- We are not in New Jersey or a powerhouse football state. Does this playbook still apply?
- Yes. The seven steps are sport-specific, not state-specific. The Rutgers football roster alone pulls from 19 different states this year, and the 1,500 college football programs in this country recruit nationally. State-by-state feeder data shifts which schools are realistic targets; the playbook itself does not change.
- Why is RawRecruit giving away this playbook for free?
- Because the playbook is the easy part. The hard part is keeping a school list current, filtering programs by your real fit, and tracking 20,000+ football coach records as staffs turn over every cycle. RawRecruit is the place that does that maintenance. The free profile is enough for most families; the paid tiers exist for the ones who want deeper fit analytics.
For The Parents Reading This
The recruiting industry charges a parent thousands, by family accounts, to close an information gap. The seven steps above close it for free. You and your kid can run them in forty-five minutes a week, sophomore spring through senior fall. Your son or daughter walks into every coach call empowered with the proper information, not paying someone else to hold it.
